Cardia Deo

March 18, 2023
10:00am – 3:30pm
Grades 9-12

Zion Lutheran Church
Grand Rapids

This one-day Cardia Deo retreat brings together senior high youth and adults from across our synod to grow in faith and build new friendships. The highlight of this event is the small groups led by high school youth and college interns on the LYO Planning Team, where we talk about life and faith in real ways.

We are Called, Gathered, Equipped and Sent to share the Heart of God (Cardia Deo) in the world. This year we focus on what it means to be Gathered to experience and share the love of Christ in the world.

COVID-19 Protocols

With the availability of vaccines and boosters that mitigate the severity of this disease for all ages eligible for this event, we do expect to meet in person! Below are protocols we have in place for the safety and wellbeing of our large and diverse group. Our goal is to manage risk, not eliminate it. We will adjust protocols based on current infection, hospitalization, and positivity rates so we can best care for ourselves, each other, and our wider community.

COVD-19 Protocols*:

  • All participants are required to provide proof of a negative at-home rapid test to their Primary Leader prior to departure on March 18. We know a negative rapid test does not guarantee participants are not infectious during the event, but gives an added assurance of protection for all participants and affords the best chance to allow us to not require facemasks.
  • We highly encourage all participants to be fully vaccinated, but this is not a requirement.
  • We do not anticipate requiring facemasks. But if infection rates are high at the time of the event and facemasks are needed, we will require high quality facemasks (N95, KN95, KF94).
  • Current CDC Guidance will be followed for those who have been exposed or test positive for COVID-19. As of December 2022, that guidance includes:
    • If you have tested positive within five days of arrival, you must stay home.
      • You may attend IF it has been more than 5 days since your positive test and all of the following are true:
        • You are fever free,
        • Your symptoms are improving,
        • You test negative.
        • You must still wear a mask through day 10 UNLESS you have tested negative twice, 48 hours apart.
      • If you have been exposed to someone who tested positive within 10 days of arrival you must wear a facemask.
  • Regardless if an illness is COVID-19 or not, please stay home if you are sick!! Pay attention to new symptoms such as fever/chills, cough, difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congested or runny nose, fatigue, muscle/body aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. We don’t want to spread ANY illness across the synod!

Unfortunately, we are not able to refund payments from cancellations due to COVID-19 protocols or other reasons. Last minute substitutions ARE accepted.

*Synod leadership will continue to monitor COVID-19 and may adjust protocols based on updated CDC Guidance and current infection rates closer to the event. Final protocols will be shared two weeks before the event.

Add an Overnight!

Some of the fun of Cardia Deo is the opportunity to stay overnight for more time to be together as a group and connect with friends. Consider adding an overnight at camp or a local hotel in Grand Rapids!

Reservations, payment and programming are the responsibility of individual congregations.

Camp Hiawatha:
Add an overnight on Friday or Saturday (or both!) at Camp Hiawatha, just 20 miles from Zion. Contact Jaime at [email protected] or 800-331-5148 for more information and to make your reservation.
